This poem is part of a series in which I explore old poetry from my school years. The poems capture the same essence as the original with some updated wording and imagery.

Kind statue

Standing guard

Watching over

A peaceful slumber

Chase away

The evil witch

Shield her from

The nightmares

Don’t let monsters

Get too close

Protect the innocent child

For now she sleeps

In childhood ignorance

Blissfully unaware

Guardian

Protect her

Keep her safe

Let her stay

In her magical land

Dispel the dark shadows

Push back terrifying

Whispers

Of a looming future

Let a young girl sleep

In her world of innocence

Before it is too late
